The ironic twist today is that le spectacle is spectacle no more. It is a ubiquitous practice. Entertainment is a weapon of mass subjectivation. Mimesis, in its full (vs. narratologically cabined) sense, returns with a political vengeance. The simulations (techne wedded to muthoss wedded to mimesis) of video games are luring and producing the new subjects of the new wars, and their bodies (literally and figuratively): virtual communities trained in the new technaï of eminently political passions, recruited and bonded through the internet.
It may be time to take pure play and its imaginary autonomy seriously, since they threaten to turn virtually ubiquitous.
